The coronavirus pandemic has forced hundreds of festivals, sporting events and tournaments to close their doors for the summer to help stall the spread of Covid-19.

But, as we bid farewell to football matches and the chance of seeing our favourite singers perform in the fields this year, nothing hit quite as hard as watching the cast of Cheer break down on social media when they were told Daytona was cancelled.

Every 12 months, college squads come together to battle it out at the city’s Championship Showcase, with the hope of being crowned the grand national champions after dedicating their entire year working towards the competition.

And just two weeks before they were supposed to compete, the 2020 event was scrapped meaning some of the Netflix stars may never cheer again.

However, despite much speculation over the future of the team, the show’s stand-out star Gabi Butler has now revealed they will all be returning for another year – and we couldn’t be happier.

When chatting with Metro.co.uk, the 22-year-old confirmed that everyone who had made mat, and was set to compete this year, will be given a second chance to perform at Daytona when the pandemic is over.

Talking about the decision, made by their coach Monica Aldama, the cheerlebrity told us: ‘We had Daytona in coming up in April, and literally at the last second, I think we were two weeks away from Daytona, it got cancelled.

‘It broke my heart because we work so hard throughout the whole season and it’s that one competition that we basically get and it just stopped.

‘It was like a whole entire season just went to waste -and we had such an amazing routine.’

But there’s hope for the squad yet, as Gabi continued: ‘Monica has basically told us that the whole entire team, that was on the team last year, would get another chance to come back this next coming season.’

‘There’s obviously new people coming to the team for this upcoming season,’ the star pressed.

‘But the people who made mat last year… since they technically didn’t get a year, Monica told them, “Okay, whoever is on mat this year, you’re automatically going to be next year.” So then she’s going to kind of intertwine the two groups.’

She went on to say how when they finally get back, Monica has already planned a banquet for them to celebrate their return – and we’re already looking forward to the Instagram reunion pics.

But until then, Gabi is hosting her very own virtual senior night, and will be teaming up with Playtex Sport on their Instagram Live to celebrate those athletes missing out on their graduations this year.

‘We look forward to the very end to celebrate,’ she explained. ‘And I feel like all the athletes this year got cheated because of this virus, myself too having to work so hard for something and then at the last second, you’re like, “Oh, God, like we can’t do this. ”

‘We know it’s this big event and I feel like that’s what we look forward to – celebrating the end. So we’re going to celebrate them even though it’s virtual, and give them the night that they didn’t get.’

The #VirtualSeniorNight Instagram Live hosted by Gabi will take place 7pm EST on Playtex Sport’s Instagram tonight.
