Google Fit to measure heart and respiratory rates using phone camera

On Thursday, Google revealed its upgraded version of the Fitness app. Now, Google’s Pixel phones will soon be able to track heart rate and respiratory rate using just the camera. The Company announced this great news through a blog post.

Currently, this feature is only available to Pixel phones. The company is planning to expand this feature to Android phones in the future.

In a blog post, Google’s Shwetak Patel, Director of Health Technologies at Google Health, wrote the feature. will be made available starting next month, and the company will be relying on sensors that are already built into the smartphone. such as the “microphone, camera and accelerometer” to track the new health parameters.

“We are seeing more and more smart devices that have more and more sensors in them,” Patel said, spotlighting the smartphone as the most ubiquitous.

How Google Pixel Camera will work to track Heart and Respiratory Rate?

To measure respiratory rate, open the latest version of the Google Fit app and simply point your Pixel phone’s front-facing camera at your head and chest. It is based on how skin color changes as blood is pumped, members of the team explained.

In order, to measure your heart rate, people just need to place their fingers over the rear-facing camera.

The idea is that these will be used for people who rely on the Google Fit app and want to track their daily wellness. The blogpost adds that users can choose to save these measurements in the app “to monitor trends over time, alongside other health and wellness information.”

“If you think about health care, the journey doesn’t end at the hospital,” Patel said.

“It’s really this continuous journey as you are living your daily life, and being able to give you feedback and measure your general wellness is an important thing.”

It is a great initiative taken by Google. There are many activity tracking devices already available in the market like Apple Smartwatches, bands, and more. Now, you don’t need to spend the extra penny on these devices.
