- Google launches News Showcase for web users.
- Only select news publishers have been currently allowing to access this feature.
- In India, 30 news publishers are part of the launch.
Google announced that it is launching its News Showcase feature for the web in India. Initially, the Google News Showcase was made available only for Android and iOS users. However, it has now been made available for the web version of Google news as well.
News Showcase is now live in a handful of countries including the UK and Australia with 700 publishers. In India, 30 news publishers are part of the launch. The product will initially be available in English and Hindi and will roll out to other languages later this year.
News showcase is part of Google’s billion-dollar global investment towards supporting quality journalism.
The benefit of Showcase on the web to users:
News Showcase is a product and licensing program that benefits publishers and readers. Readers get more insight into the stories that matter to them with curated story panels across several Google services.
For instance, if a user follows a news outlet that covers their local news, they will see daily updates on the most important local stories, selected by that newsroom. These selections will appear within the ‘For You’ feed in a dedicated area to discover new News Showcase publications.
What is the benefit of Showcase on the web to publishers?
Participating news publishers will increase their revenue through monthly payments from Google, including access to paywalled content to provide users free access to select stories.
If you’re a publisher that relies on Google’s News Showcase for traffic, the addition of a desktop could mean a larger potential audience to drive to your site from a new device type. It also helps to ensure that your news site is still performing well on desktop too.
Google adds enhanced panels to mobile News Showcase. Along with the desktop experience, the News Showcase is also rolling out enhanced panels that will allow publishers to add linked bullet points to provide more context and information surrounding news and stories.
