Manchester United hero Brian McClair believes Scott Mctominay could become a ‘great’ player at Old Trafford but warns the club could lose him if he doesn’t become a regular.

The Scot emerged under Jose Mourinho and despite the Portuguese coach lavishing praise on him, McTominay’s long-term future remained uncertain.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s arrival threw McTominay’s future into instant danger and the midfielder was close to joining Celtic on loan in January 2019.

However, injury to Paul Pogba earlier this season gave the 23-year-old a chance to cement a place under Solskjaer and he’s taken it with both hands.

Nevertheless, Solskjaer hopes on signing the likes of Jadon Sancho and Jack Grealish this summer to add extra competition to his midfield and McClair has warned the Red Devils they could lose a potentially ‘great player’.

‘I think Scott McTominay, if he stays at Manchester United, will be a great player for Manchester United,’ McClair told Superstar Speakers.

‘It’s a similar thing to Darren Fletcher. He’s come through the youth system, he wants it, he’s a Manchester United fan, he’s determined. He’s overcome several situations with regards to growth spurts, injury and illness.

‘I think he can be a Manchester United great. I hope that he remains at Manchester United for long enough for that to occur but it would not surprise me if there were other clubs looking to recruit him in the not too distant future.’
