- Sony has sold 10 million PS5 consoles.
- PS% Owners can buy a new console at 80 percent of its cost if their current PS5 has physical damage but is in warranty.
- It’s the company’s fastest-selling console to date.
The PlayStation 5 has sold 10 million units worldwide, since its launch in November, reaching that number faster than any other console made by Sony Interactive Entertainment. The PS5 reached the milestone 249 days after its launch. By comparison, PlayStation 4 consoles have sold, 271 days after its launch.
PlayStation 5 owners who bought the console and somehow damaged HDMI ports have an option to purchase a new console at 80 percent of its cost i.e. Rs. 39,992 instead of its Rs. 49,990 as long as the damaged console is in warranty. They were not given an option to repair the console but instead to buy a new one.
Sony has also shared some milestones around PS5 launch titles today. Spider-Man: Miles Morales has sold more than 6.5 million copies since its launch in November, with Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart selling more than 1.1 million copies since its launch last month. Returnal has also sold more than 560,000 copies since its April launch.
PlayStation chief Jim Ryan in an interview said:
“It is too early to tell which markets were the hottest given widespread demand, but pointed out that China was a pleasant surprise. The company sold out its PS5 launch stock “very, very quickly” despite a local market focused on mobile games and the free-to-play model”.
“For physically damaged products, we support customers to purchase a new product, by offering a goodwill discount.” The company reportedly said the cost to repair the damaged HDMI port would be more than buying a new PS5 at 20 percent off.
“Pushing through supply challenges and a global pandemic, we’re proud to have delivered a transformational gaming experience that is captivating players around the world,” said Veronica Rogers, SVP, Global Sales and Business Operations at Sony.
