The messaging app has started sending new in-app notifications to users. Several Twitter users share screenshots of notifications that they have received from WhatsApp.

The new policy stating that WhatsApp is not changing the privacy of a user’s personal conversations. It also states that the privacy policy goes into effect from May 15, 2021, and that users need to accept it in order to continue using WhatsApp after the date.

The messaging app has also reassured in the reminder that WhatsApp cannot read the private conversations of users because they are end-to-end encrypted.

Facebook’s chief executive Mark Zuckerberg has previously defended the new privacy policy saying it would help small businesses grow as it would give them access to the same kinds of tools—analytics or targeted advertising—that historically were available only to big companies.

WhatsApp’s privacy policy mainly relates to messaging between businesses and their customers.

The company explains chat with the business account will be store on Facebook’s servers and mainly used by WhatsApp for targeting ads on Facebook.

The messaging platform recently clarified that there’s a difference between “messages with friends or family” and “messages with a business”. It further said that the new privacy policy is mainly for business accounts while the policy for personal chats remains unchanged.

After May 15, people who haven’t accepted the privacy policy can still receive calls and get notifications, but they’ll need to agree to the update to send messages,” WhatsApp said.

User accounts will remain active to allow them to accept the new terms of service and updates. Before May 15th, you can export your chat history on Android or iPhone, and download a report of your account.

The accounts that do not accept the new policy will be deleted after 120 days of the due date.
