YouTube will now show advt on all videos even if creators don’t want them. The company changed its rules on video monetization, and YouTube creators aren’t happy. Now, Google will now show ads on all videos, even if their creators don’t want ads and creators won’t get any money.

YouTube has added a new section to its Terms of Service: Right to Monetise to highlight that it will start running ads on videos from channels that are not a part of the YouTube Partner Programme.

The update will mostly affect smaller creators without a huge viewership. YouTube’s Partner Program requires creators to have accrued 4,000 total hours of watch time over the last 12 months and have more than 1,000 subscribers.

  • The revenue generated from the ads placed on their videos will not be shared with them.
  • Placing ads on their channel may impact their growth, as advertising can act as an irritant for viewers who have not yet become loyal followers of that channel.
  • Advertisers get the flexibility to choose creators, on whose content they would like to place an advt.

Prior to this, the video-sharing platform’s ad placements were allowed under YPP, of which members were big creators. Such content creators also earned a share of the revenue from the ads, under the partner program with YouTube.

YouTube’s new terms of service in India read:

“Many content creators, including artistes and influencers, choose not to put ads on their content so that their fans and followers can view their content disruption-free. However, now they won’t have a choice.”

YouTube has not provided any details about the number of creators being impacted by the new rules. However, it did mention in its forum post that the change will initially be implemented “on a limited number of videos”. Ads will also run only on videos that meet YouTube’s ad-friendly guidelines and don’t include “inappropriate” language, violence, or adult content.
